How To Splurge Sustainably
Being eco-friendly sometimes gets a bad rap; the eco-friendly choice can be seen as the inconvenient or even lesser choice. We disagree. We think that there are ways to practice sustainability that aren’t about trading down, they’re just about doing things differently.
In that spirit, we’ve come up with some ideas for sustainable “splurges”; things that you can do that scratch that itch for small self-indulgences (because we all have them!) while still being eco-friendly.
Here are four ideas for sustainable “splurges”:
1. Invest in reusables that you love – and that will help you be more sustainable day-to-day.
There is a shocking number of different products that one can swap out for reusables; everything from plastic bags to disposable cups to cotton swabs to paper towels, can be switched to reusable alternatives. Sure, the upfront cost of the reusable may be more than the disposable version, but you will more than recoup that investment in a short period of time. Plus, you can find some reusables that are super cute! Two of our favorite eco shops are Oh Eco and Sustainable Haus.
2. Take a ‘ditch day’ and get out in nature.
Studies show that being in nature makes people happy, so consider taking some time away from your day-to-day responsibilities to take a special excursion to some patch of nature near you. After all, taking a bit of “me time” is one of the best indulgences out there.
3. Trade up for something special.
Looking to get a new piece of clothing or accessory? In the words of Vivienne Westwood, “Buy less, choose well, make it last. Quality rather than quantity: That is true sustainability.” Invest in a piece that is truly special and will get lots of use over time – and do it sustainably by shopping secondhand or purchasing from a high-quality sustainable brand.

4. Enjoy sustainable travel.
Been thinking about booking a trip? Consider eco-friendly travel! While travel takes a toll on the environment, there are ways to reduce the environmental impact of travel and even foster love and appreciation for the natural world through travel.
